Apronyms

Tony and I started making up acronyms some time back in about 1999, because we were exchanging puns so awful that a mere 'LOL' didn't do them justice. We eventually made a HyperCard stack to contain them all, which was released with 1385 of our creations. Later I made the stack generate web pages, and the Acronyms website was born.

Later, I recoded the site to generate the pages on the server using CGIs written in C, and later still, moved it all to PHP. Tony invented the word 'apronym' and the site moved from acronyms.co.nz to apronyms.com. Tony created the new logo for it (he'd made the original one for the HyperCard stack) and I tried to make the rest of the site look like it... though some elements still resemble the old HyperCard-generated pages.

Since HyperCard was in decline and I was all excited about Cocoa, I wrote a Cocoa version of the stack, and haven't really bothered maintaining the old stack since. We now have more than 10 000 apronyms from hundreds of contributors, and even though updating the site is much easier than it used to be (the stack took a long time to generate the pages) I still don't update it often enough.

I have created apronyms relating to most of my Interests, so most of the pages on this site link to the appropriate apronyms categories.
