Events

I go to lectures and other events on topics that I am familiar with and which I would like to think I'd understand in any language. Particularly technical things such as computers and physics, because a lot of technical words are the same in both languages, just differently pronounced.

Apple ExpoI went to the Apple Expo in Paris in 2005, and found that, as expected, I had no problem understanding the Mac demos in French. I couldn't understand much else, but I did find I got a lot more French practice in Paris than in Geneva. Not that people wouldn't speak English to me... they were just as quick at switching to English as the Genevans are. But the difference was that if I persisted in speaking in French, they'd switch back, even though both of us knew that they spoke English better than I spoke French. More...

Discovery MondaysThe first Monday of each month is Discovery Monday at CERN's Microcosm exhibition. Each time people explain a different aspect of what we do at CERN, with demonstrations etc. It's all in French, but I understand it because at that sort of level I usually already know the physics and computing concepts they're talking about. The fact that many technical words are the same (but pronounced differently) in both languages helps, as does the fact that most of the presenters do not speak French as a first language. More...
